Breast Augmentation Post-Birth

For many women after pregnancy and/or breast feeding, there can be a reduction in breast size or a change in breast shape that may prompt some to seek breast augmentation. This can enhance their self esteem and make the breasts more proportionate with their body. The surgery e.g. breast lift or implantation, is performed under general anesthesia. Most women will experience some pain and discomfort for the first 48 hours after the surgery that require pain medication, and the breasts remain swollen and sensitive for a couple of weeks. Normal routine activities are usually resumed within a week and more strenuous activity after a month. Scars are typically pink and firm the first two months, but after this begin to fade in color even though the size will remain about the same.

In preparation for this procedure, a focus on healthy nutrition can help speed the healing process and prevent complications. As with any significant surgical incision, wound healing is always a priority, and infections can be the most serious initial complication. Anti-oxidants seem to allow faster wound healing presumably through its protection of tissues from free radicals. These are toxic oxygen particles that are generated from the bodies own metabolism, and after surgery, these are increased. In addition, anti-oxidants allow the immune system to function better, which aid it in fighting off any secondary infections. Of the anti-oxidant vitamins, Vitamin A has also been shown to strengthen scar formation, and Vitamin E has shown faster wound healing. Vitamin C in addition promotes collagen and elastin formation which helps wound healing as well. Other important micro-nutrients involved in better wound healing include zinc, thiamine and Vitamin B5.

It has also been noted that general anesthesia results in a significant drain on the inherent anti-oxidant system within the body, and it is even more important with these types of surgery to stay on top of good nutritional supplementation. Another factor that results in greater free radical formation includes tobacco use. Women should quit smoking to allow for the best outcome. A better immunologic function to fight off bacterial infections would help prevent many post-operative complications. In addition to the anti-oxidants and minerals listed above, selenium, iron, copper and folic acid may concurrently help improve outcomes.

As with most medical conditions, nutritional attention can make for a much smoother course during treatments and procedures. Maintaining adequate stores of needed vitamins, minerals and other micro-nutrients is a way of you helping yourself be in the best shape for a speedy recovery.
