![]() Yeast Infection
Infections of the body by Candida Albicans, commonly known as yeast infections, occur infrequently overall, but typically are a sign of a weakened immune system. This yeast is part of our normal body’s makeup, and exists in a balance with other normal bacteria within the linings of various organs such as gastrointestinal systems and vaginal systems. When in balance, it helps produce B complex vitamins and beta glucan, both of which help our immune system function. However, when it is allowed to flourish out of a normal balance, it can cause various symptoms including rashes, lethargy, fatigue, inflammation and pain, poor concentration, and others. Any disorder that reduces the strength of the immune system increases the risk of a yeast infection such as concurrent illnesses, lack of sleep, cancers, HIV infections, etc. In addition, the use of antibiotics which may reduce the number of our body’s normal bacteria, can result in yeast infections opportunistically. Yeast, which is a fungus, exists predominantly in areas that are warm and moist. This can be areas of skin, the oral cavity, the vaginal tissues and surrounding perineum, as well as anywhere along the intestinal tract. Often, yeast infections can proliferate when the normal pH balance of these areas change from their normal state. Well balanced diets with ample fruits, yogurts, vegetables, and whole grains as well as good overall hygiene can help keep the body’s pH balance in order. Regarding diet as well, the intake of Acidophilus which is a “healthy” bacteria for the body is usually introduced in dietary yogurts. It can also be taken in supplemental form. It basically reduces the ability of yeast to proliferate by occupying the tissue linings itself, and also by returning the body’s normal pH balance to the intestines. In addition, it actually helps eliminate other toxic substances from the body. Candida is also known through fermentation to take sugars and produce alcohol. Although levels are usually small, they can increase enough to result in lethargy and poor concentration. Acidophilus does not have this problem. Molybdenum, which is a mineral, can also be taken to prevent alcohol production by the yeast present. B complex vitamins, especially B3, B5 and B6, are also helpful. In addition to bolstering the immune system, their presence in the diet or with supplements reduces the need for the production of these vitamins by Candida in the intestinal tract. This can help reduce the amount of yeast in the body. They also reduce the fermentation that occurs within the yeast. Vitamins A, C and E of course also help strengthen the immune system through anti-oxidant properties. Other important minerals for the immune system can include zinc and selenium. There are several herbal remedies that are used for vaginal yeast infections. A few of these include calcarea carb, pulsatilla, natrum mir, sepia, and sulphur. Goldenseal root which is an alkaloid has been used to treat Candida infections of the intestinal tract, and is reported to prevent yeast overgrowth. Lastly, some amino acids are used to help fight yeast infections as well. L-lysine and L-threonine are immune system enhancers, while L-methionine and L-cysteine are natural anti-oxidants and help eliminate certain toxins. Whether it is prevention or active treatment of an existing yeast infection, the main focus is to empower your body’s immune system to function at its best. When compromised, these common fungi can cause significant symptoms. Adequate rest, regular exercise, a balanced diet, and attention to needed vitamins, minerals and “healthy” micro-organisms in foods and/or supplements can create the best environment for health. |
